For many Tucson children, hunger doesn’t take a summer break.

Did you know that 17% (2010) of Pima County residents are unable to provide enough food to feed the household?

These families can be found in area communities large and small – comprised of individuals from every age group and ethnic group. They are the households most impacted by the recession, unemployment, home foreclosure and lingering economic uncertainly. Many of these households earn too much to qualify for food stamp benefits or other public assistance, yet struggle to afford enough food to put on the table each and every day.

They may be your neighbor.

Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child's need for good nutrition. Many children will have to skip a meal today. During the summer we see families needing more food, because their children are home. Catalina Community Services provides them with free, nutritious food and snacks to help children of families in need get the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow throughout the summer months. We also provide healthy noontime snacks for those children attending our summer activities program during June and July.

But, we can’t help Tucson children without you.

We are in need of: cereal, peanut butter, canned fruit and packaged dry foods. You can drop off your items 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at our facility at 3535 E. Hawser St. (just past Oracle/Golder Ranch Dr.) or Creative Smiles, 15631 N. Oracle Road, Suite 187 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
