noticed Mr. Huckelberry didn’t mention the money he wanted to divert from the Highway Fund to buy land for soccer fields.  He rationalized it by saying there wasn’t enough money in the fund to do much good, anyway.

Also, he didn’t mention his pet project, the I-11 freeway, which would cost millions more than if the existing roads were double-decked.  Of course, a new highway would provide opportunities for malls and casinos, even though people would have to relocate and the environment would be disrupted.

    Ms. Byrdle. No money budgeted for pavement preservation or other road projects was used to purchase the land intended for an expansion of the Kino Sports Complex.
    See this memo from Mr. Huckelberry to that effect.

    Also, funding for Interstate 11 through Pima County, if approved sometime in the future, will come almost entirely from the federal government.
