Senator John McCain was scheduled to speak at an event sponsored by Basis School in Oro Valley on March 26 at 4:00 p.m. I drove over there arriving around 2:45 p.m. only to find out that the event had been cancelled by the Senator’s office. There were no McCain staffers there, an no explanation was given as to why the event was cancelled.
I was informed by the school staff that McCain’s office contacted them at 1:42 p.m. to let them know that the Senator would not be appearing. Again, no explanation was given. (about two hours prior to the event).
I was extremely disappointed that earlier & timely notice of the cancellation had not been given to the public, and especially to those who took time off to attend. Also,
the school put in a tremendous amount of work preparing for the Senator’s visit. Needless to say, they were terribly disappointed too.
I called the Senator’s Tucson office and made inquiry as to why the event was cancelled. The staffer stated that “no statement will be given at this time”. I told him this was sheer nonsense and that the people had a right to know since several hundred people were greatly inconvenienced. He said he would let the Senator know. Big deal!
Of course, like many, I wondered why the event was cancelled: flat tire; vehicle broke down; illness; summoned back to D.C.; a bad day in Phoenix the day before. Who knows.
Very inconsiderate, I would say. You and your staff can do better Senator McCain. Your constituents deserve better treatment than this.
