There are countless advantages to having the Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana. The event is a tremendous source of civic pride. It’s an honor to have the world’s 64 best professional golfers here for a week of exciting competition. Marana gets to climb onto the world stage for exposure that would otherwise cost millions to buy.

But one important benefit that is sometimes overlooked is the huge amount of charitable dollars generated by the event each year. The PGA TOUR announced earlier this month that the 2012 tournament was responsible for almost $1.3 million in support of regional children’s charities.

More than $8.8 million in charitable support has been raised over the six years the event has taken place in Marana. Some of that money has gone toward causes in our town. That level of support is hard to come by without the hard work of a well-run organization like the Tucson Conquistadores and the backing of a powerful worldwide brand like the PGA TOUR.

Proceeds from the event benefit kids’ charities, including the First Tee of Tucson, area Boys and Girls clubs, local YMCAs and the Pima County Special Olympics. Last year, The Conquistadores celebrated 50 years of supporting youth projects in the region. The Town of Marana is proud to have them as a community partner.

The Accenture Match Play Championship is part of the World Golf Championships series, which brings together the best players from several international PGA TOURS. The Town plays a crucial role in keeping the prestigious event in Southern Arizona by providing more than $100,000 of in-kind support for the event every year through police protection, traffic engineering and operations and maintenance work.

Next year’s tournament is Feb. 18-24 at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain. Those of us who serve the Town of Marana hope to see you there for a week of exciting professional golf. It’s an opportunity to improve the lives of children and have a day of fun in the Arizona outdoors. Everyone wins.
