On Thursday, April 17, 2014 an article appeared in the Northwest Section of the Arizona Daily Star. It discussed the continuing conflict between two Oro Valley Town Council members and the Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD). The same argument has been going on for several years. An overwhelming majority of the Oro Valley general population loves the Police Department and the services it provides. An even greater majority of the business owners in Oro Valley love the safety and protection provided by the OVPD.  A small group of residents, led by these two councilpersons, mimic the actions of a couple of yapping little K-9‘s when both interact at the dog park or someone rings the door bell.

We are used to that….to a point. It’s frustrating to the larger group but we understand that they need some platform on which to dissent. It’s the American way.

However the aforementioned article contained comments from Councilman Bill Garner that reached a level so far below the belt that, without question, is disgusting, embarrassing and repulsive. I have lived in Oro Valley for 17 years and I have never witnessed something as vile.  Mr. Garner referred the every commissioned officer, CVAP volunteer, Records Clerk, Dispatcher, Forensic Specialist and Administrative personnel as a thug (brutal hoodlum) and a prima donna (spoiled brat).

Now I have no issue with some good intentioned, even tacky to a point, bantering between opposing sides of most any issue.  But this is beyond the pale. It is an insult to our community. It is damaging to our ability to attract business opportunities in the near and foreseeable future.  It’s just wrong.

These comments cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged. Every off duty person employed by  or volunteers of the OVPD, citizens, the business community and every human who filled out a post-it complimenting our public safety at the Our Voice- Our Future events should be at the Oro Valley Town Hall to call for a public apology  and resignation from Councilman Bill Garner.  We OWE this to our Police Department and to ourselves. We owe this to our community.
