• Don’t guess by touch -- get a more accurate temperature reading with a quality thermometer. There are several ways to take a temperature, from the ear and mouth to the underarm and forehead.

• Rectal temperature taking is recommended for infants, while oral thermometers are good for kids who are at least 4 years old who can easily hold the thermometer in their mouths.

• It’s important to keep children home from school, play dates and other activities for at least 24 hours after their fevers break.

• New non-invasive thermometers now can take readings in seconds by gently swiping a child’s forehead or by using an ear thermometer with a pre-warmed tip to minimize cooling when inserted.

• Thermometers with memory recall functions can help parents share results with pediatricians.
