(StatePoint) It may sound surprising, but summer is the perfect time for kids to discover their love for reading.
Summer vacation provides parents an opportunity to turn summer pastimes (e.g. camping, stargazing and more) into learning moments their kids will never forget. And since summer is all about outdoor fun, why not make reading a big part of that experience?
Here are some top tips for parents:
• Take story time outside. Whether it’s at night by the campfire or in the garden during the day, have everyone bring along books for a fun family read-aloud.
• Join a summer reading program at your local library or online at www.Scholastic.com/summer. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online program where kids can read, log their minutes, earn rewards and help set a new world record for summer reading.
• Be inspired by your child’s favorite book for vacation ideas. Bring a story to life by taking trips to museums, historical sites or national parks featured in the book.
With some encouragement, you can help your kids realize that reading goes hand-in-hand with summer vacation.
