Happy New Year! I hope you're having an excellent start to 2014 and enjoying this beautiful weather we've been blessed with. My first year representing you on the Pima County Board of Supervisors was exciting, incredibly busy, and I am eager to see what 2014 will bring. A few of my accomplishments in 2013 are summarized below.
My Voting Record
I kept my campaign promise about openness and transparency in government because I believe that the citizens of Pima County have the right to know what their elected officials are doing. One of my most important duties as a Pima County Supervisor is to represent the citizens of District 1 when I vote on issues. My voting record is true to my mantra that we must cut excessive spending, transparency, and accountability. You can view my 2013 dissenting votes here.
Budget Q & A
On May 17, 2013, I organized a Budget Q and A Session for the general public to obtain a better understanding of Pima County's $1.3 billion dollar budget. During this event County Administrator, Chuck Huckelberry, and several Department Directors answered questions previously submitted by the public. I appreciate Mr. Huckelberry and his staff participating and the many volunteers who spent time analyzing this budget with me. I look forward to holding a similar session for the 2014 budget as I believe this is the first step towards better budget analysis. The 2013 Q and A Session video can be viewed here.
Constituents can contact my office when they need assistance from a County agency. This includes assistance with minor road repair, planning and zoning issues, and other various requests. Since I took office one year ago, my office has assisted 359 constituents. Even with this high volume of calls, my office averages 14 business days to close out a case. Town Hall Meetings
In the fourth quarter of 2013 I held three Town Hall meetings. These Town Halls provide an opportunity for the citizens of Pima County to learn more about the service my office can provide, discuss the issues impacting Pima County, and share their thoughts, concerns and comments on current issues facing our County. When I'm not studying for or attending a board meeting, I am meeting with my constituents, advocacy organizations, local leaders, and elected officials to provide updates on important issues facing Pima County or listening to concerns they want to bring to my attention. In 2013, I visited and toured local businesses, schools, organizations, and health facilities. I also enjoyed attending and participating in many festivals, ground-breaking events, ribbon cuttings, and parades. These events provide a unique opportunity to meet with as many constituents as possible so I can stay informed about their concerns and hear their feedback.
I use social media as another avenue to communicate with my constituents. My Facebook page is updated daily and my YouTube page contains full Board of Supervisor meetings as well as clips of interest. I keep a photo gallery on Flicker of various events and meetings with constituents. Don't forget to Follow me on Twitter as my staff tweets throughout the Tuesday Board of Supervisor meetings. I also have a new website, www.allymillerdistrict1.com where you can stay updated on my local appearances, view my blog entries, and contact my office.
I further connect with my constituents by appearing regularly on local radio shows. Join me on your drive home for "Miller Time" on the James T. Harris Show on 104.1 FM at 5:00 p.m. the first three Wednesdays of each month. Or catch me on your drive into work as I provide an update to Chris and Joe on WakeUp! Tucson on 1030 AM at 7:00 a.m. the last Wednesday of each month. Updates will be posted on my Facebook page when I will make a special appearance on Garrett Lewis 790 KNST, The Jon Justice Show 104.1 FM, and The Bill Buckmaster Show.
Helping Hands Program
I created my Helping Hands volunteer program to help make Pima County cleaner, more beautiful, and more welcoming for all while giving back to the community. November 2, 2013, marked the kickoff as we partnered with Catalina Community Services for a morning of yard work for a local senior citizen. Our second event, held on December 12, was with the Pima Animal Care Center when we walked 200 dogs and delivered treats, toys, food, blankets, and more for our furry friends. Both of these events were great opportunities to help our community and I am looking forward to our next event in April 2014.
District 1 Volunteers
I have been blessed with fantastic volunteers throughout my first year in office. I want to personally thank all the citizens who volunteer their time to serve as my appointee to a Pima County Board, Commission, or Committee. Thank you to the 12 individuals who served on my Budget Review Committee. Thank you to Lorne Higgins for his unwavering dedication to many of my events by stacking chairs, greeting guests, and other various tasks.
