With temperatures hitting 107 degrees last week, it’s no surprise that residents in Southern Arizona are seeking cover, and one of those summertime favorites is going to the movies.

While ‘The Marvel’s Avengers’ has been the hit to date, some are making some waves such as the third installment of ‘Men in Black’ and last weekend’s release of ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, staring Charlize Theron.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

With kids out of school, the Box Office will cater to families this weekend with the opening of ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’. Let’s face it, The Madagascar series doesn’t rank as high as Pixar films, but it has kept audiences entertained in the first two releases. The worry with a third movie is that they are going to start stretching, and judging by the previews, it looks like the elastic is about the give on this storyline.

The movie opens on June 8.

The Amazing Spiderman

The big opening is coming during the 4th of July weekend, with the release of ‘The Amazing Spiderman’. Those expecting to see the dorky Toby Maguire put on the mask and swing his web from skyscraper to skycraper in New York better think again.

Not wanting to lose the funding a series like Spiderman can provide, Sony went with director Marc Webb, who went on to cast 28-year-old British actor Andrew Garfield to take over the part of Peter Parker.

In a recent interview, Garfield said, ‘’The first time I saw Spider-Man was on the animated TV series. It floored me as a kid. I loved the character and pretended I was Peter Parker.’’

Peter Parker’s love interest will also have a new face in the film, with Emma Stone taking on the role. Parker’s aunt and uncle will be played by Martin Sheen and Sally Field.

In less than a month, Sony will find out whether or not audiences have had enough of this superhero, as if a few years between films is just enough to reignite interest.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

As if they haven’t made enough versions of this animated flick already, a fourth installment of the Ice Age creations is here. Opening on June 6, Ray Romano and the crew are back. While it is a kid’s movie, it’s probably not going to be a good one.

The Dark Knight Rises

This is probably one of the most anticipated films of the summer, especially after the success of the first Dark Knight movie, which brought intrigue with Heath Ledger’s death six months before the film’s opening, and won Ledger an Academy Award for his performance as The Joker.

This is the third and final installment of the bat films, which will star Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway.

While the figures are unconfirmed, some say the film cost $250 million to make, and Warner Bros is opening the film with high hopes of earning an Oscar nomination for best picture next year.

The movie opens on July 20.

The Bourne Legacy

On Aug. 3, the Bourne series will continue, but without star Matt Damon or director Paul Greengrass.

Rather than throwing the successful series aside, like most films opening this summer, Universal decided to keep going, with a new director and star.

The new star will be Jeremy Renner, who also played in the hit ‘Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, as Aaron Cross, a covert government-trained assassin with a similar story to Jason Bourne’s.

In a recent interview, the director, Tony Gilroy, said, ‘’The idea was to stretch the horizon of the whole franchise and leave open the opportunity for Matt to come back when he wanted.”
