When Oro Valley Town Council gave initial approval for the Aquatic Center in December 2011, it was with the vision that the facility would be both an economic driver for the town and an improvement to quality of life for our residents. It has been just two short months since our grand opening, and I am proud to announce that the facility has been an overwhelming success on both accounts.

Before the Oro Valley Aquatic Center opened its doors on March 15, 2013, it had already booked several state- and national-level competitions, including the Arizona 8 & Under State Championships and the 2014 National Synchronized Swimming Championships.

It’s official: Oro Valley is on the map for national sports tourism.

An early feasibility study indicated that this facility would create approximately $2.2 million a year in economic activity in our community. Figures from recent events, and projections for upcoming events, are trending toward that $2 million mark:

Arizona 8 and Under State Championships – $95,000 in economic impact

U.S. Masters Short Course Zones/Championships – $143,000

State Synchronized Swimming Championships – $237,680

2014 National Synchronized Swimming Championships – Projection of 560 athletes and nearly $430,000 in economic impact

The Aquatic Center has truly been an investment in our community’s economic health. It has also been an investment in our residents’ quality of life.

Prior to the renovations, the old pool facility saw approximately 120,000 visitors per year. We are already on pace to double that number which means one thing: the town is meeting the recreational needs of more residents and guests of all ages.

With an interactive splash pad, giant water slide, 25-yard recreation pool, 50-meter competition pool, family changing rooms, concession stand and classroom, this facility has already become a hub of community activity for families. Additionally, the 50-meter competition pool has been a draw for our local swim teams as well as national organizations.

Now that summer is upon us, the Aquatic Center has a full schedule of programs and activities, including SCUBA instruction, swimming lessons, water aerobics and Pilates, Amphibious Athletes Summer Camp, and a host of special events, including a 4th of July celebration. Please be sure to visit us at orovalleyaz.gov to learn about all the opportunities this summer at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center. We hope to see you soon.
