MSN.com:

The number of confirmed dead in the Washington state mudslide is expected to jump considerably Friday after at least eight more bodies were believed to have been found, according to reports.

Emergency officials will hold a news conference at 9 a.m. (noon ET) to discuss the latest in the search effort, which was hampered Thursday by rain. By day's end, officials said, the death toll had risen slightly to 17 following Saturday’s hillside collapse in Oso.

“We understand there has been confusion over the reported number of fatalities,” Snohomish County District 21 Fire Chief Travis Hots said Thursday night in a statement. “This has been a challenging process for all of us.”

Hots said at a Thursday night news briefing that the number of dead is “going to likely change very, very much tomorrow morning.”
