Images reveal a 2008 full of changes, big and small
April 16, 2008: Carlos Rivera sits in the shade at Steam Pump Ranch, watching the horses eat and listening to the buzz of traffic on Oracle Road. Rivera, who had been the ranch caretaker for more than two decades, left last April, along with the other residents, as Oro Valley prepared to take ownership of the historic property the following month.
May 12, 2008: Phil Click, a Splendido resident, plays the Nintendo Wii in May 2008. Splendido uses the Wii game console with its residents to exercise their minds and bodies.
Feb. 25, 2008: Playing two rounds of golf against Stewart Cink, Tiger Woods took and held onto his lead early, finishing the day's round and winning the championship 8-up on the 11th hole during the Accenture Match Play tournament last February in Marana.
Aug. 1, 2008: Stacey and Aaron Nymeyer, parents of Olympic swimmer Lacey Nymeyer, wrap themselves in a flag signed by members of the U.S. Olympic team. Their daughter went on to win a silver medal in the Beijing games that summer.
July 2, 2008: Tohono Chul Park held its annual "Bloom Night," during which the park remained open until midnight so visitors could see the night-blooming cereus cactus unfurl its flowers. The mass bloom occurs only on one night every year.
Sept. 2, 2008: Construction hit a feverish pace at the Oro Valley Marketplace in September, when this photo was taken, in anticipation of its opening the following month.
Oct. 23, 2008: Pamela Elslager holds her 7-month-old daughter Myla as they search for pumpkins at St. Marks United Methodist Church's pumpkin patch located at Magee Road and La Canada Drive in October. A percentage of the sales from the 3,000 pumpkins would go towards the church's youth program.
