Candidates for the Arizona Legislature in District 26 spent a combined total of nearly $400,000 in the 2010 campaign.

Records filed with the Arizona Secretary of State’s office show that candidates spent an average of $79,868 on their campaigns, more than $9,000 more per candidate than in the 2008 race.

Overall spending in 2010, however, was less than in 2008, when more than $560,000 was spent. In 2008, eight candidates were vying for the three legislative posts. This time, there were five hopefuls.

Spending by independent groups also was down in comparison to 2008. The groups, with no official ties to individual candidates, have been criticized in the past as exerting unfair influence over the outcome of elections.

Independent groups spent a total of $168,592 in District 26 this election cycle, as compared with $358,711in 2008.
