Town councils from Marana and Oro Valley plan to conduct their first joint meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Marana Municipal Complex.

Among topics on the joint study session agenda are water, tourism and economic development, and development of the Tangerine Road corridor that links the two communities, Marana Town Manager Gilbert Davidson told the Marana Town Council on Tuesday.

“Having our two councils meet in early January is a good opportunity to start these discussions,” Davidson said. “We’re excited to work with them.”

Davidson said water is “a big issue, certainly, for our two jurisdictions. Any number of different scenarios could be explored” to maximize water resources for each community, he suggested.

Tourism and economic development are a “major focus area” for the Town of Marana, which is working on ways “to strengthen the relationship” with Oro Valley “as it relates to the tourism piece,” he continued.

A portion of unincorporated Pima County sits along Tangerine between Marana and Oro Valley, Davidson said. “We have expressed interest in annexation, they have expressed interest in annexation,” Davidson said. “We need to talk about it.” Tangerine is “one of the next major, major projects” for Regional Transportation Authority improvement, he pointed out.

Oro Valley is “our sister city,” Marana Mayor Ed Honea said, and the communities have “many, many things in common.” The joint session is “a tremendous opportunity,” he said.
