An 81-year-old woman found murdered in her Northwest home May 23 died of asphyxiation, according to autopsy results released late last week.

A friend found the body of Dorothy “Betty” Carras in her home on the 1600 block of West Chimayo Place, near the intersection of North La Cañada Drive and West Magee Road, according to Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Dawn Hanke.

Investigators believed Carras was killed sometime in the night Thursday, May 22. “She had been seen by friends late in the afternoon the day before,” Hanke said.

The friend who found her body was supposed to have met her for a walk early Friday morning. When Carras didn’t answer her door, her friend went back home to get a spare key to the house.

Carras’ body displayed “obvious signs of trauma,” according to Hanke.

Carras, whom friends called “Betty,” lived alone in the Northwest neighborhood.

She volunteered as a docent at Tohono Chul Park, a couple of miles from her home.

Investigators have yet to release any information about how Carras’ killer entered her home, or what the motive for her murder might have been. No suspects have been identified by the sheriff’s office.

Anyone with information about the case may call the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 741-4810.
