Far different from the halls of government buildings that featured so prominently in his last job, Mike Reuswaat’s new gig has him instead traipsing through the gyms and community spaces of the local YMCA.
The former Marana town manager earlier this month became the executive director of the Northwest YMCA Pima Community Center, 7770 N. Shannon Road.
“It’s getting me back to something I enjoy,” Reuswaat said, noting that he completed his undergraduate and graduate work in the field of recreation.
Reuswaat emerged from a national search of potential hires, according to YMCA of Southern Arizona Vice President and COO Dave Powell.
Powell called the YMCA’s decision to hire the former town manager “a decision that’s owned by a lot of people.”
By that, he meant that the local YMCA branch board, in addition to staff at the Shannon Road facility, and others all who were involved in the hiring process.
Reuswaat had never worked for the YMCA, Powell said.
But, to prepare for his round of interviews, Reuswaat “studied the ‘Y’ culture,” Powell said. “I’ve really come to appreciate his eagerness to learn.”
Already on the job a few weeks, Reuswaat has immersed himself in the task, asking questions of his managers all the time, Powell said.
Certainly Reuswaat’s history in the Northwest and the relationships he cultivated in his years in Marana government should serve him well in his YMCA post, Powell suggested.
He’ll have to learn a few new tricks, but already Reuswaat expressed the kind of optimism he hopes to sustain in the new job.
“These are great folks to work with,” he said.
