New safety measures may soon go up at a traffic intersection that sent a Marana High School student to the hospital last month.

Town Manager Mike Reuwsaat said he will likely approve the new signals in the coming days for the intersection of Sandario and Emigh roads near Marana high school, following the results of a road study.

On March 14, a car driven by 18-year-old Marana High School senior Cecelia Van Dyke collided with a Waste Management garbage truck. Van Dyke was discharged from UMC on April 3.

The three-way intersection will likely get a stop sign with a flashing red light and traffic bumps leading up to the intersection, similar to where Twin Peaks road crosses Sandario Road nearby.

If approved, the safety devices will be installed in the summertime so as not to conflict with school traffic, Reuwsaat said.
