A man who is believed to have been fatally shot and then burned in the Ironwood Forest National Monument has been identified as 25-year-old Nael Alfredo Garcia-Moreno.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, a call came in from Border Patrol agents who observed a truck, with its lights off, enter the monument near the intersection of Mile Wide and Reservation roads, about nine miles south of Picture Rocks.

Agents heard what sounded like a gunshot and then saw flames originating from the area. The vehicle left at a high rate of speed on Reservation Road. Border Patrol followed but eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

The Pima County Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded to the scene.

The case is under investigation.
