Oro Valley police on Friday, June 27, called off a search for a man suspected in a foiled early-morning break-in on Calle Del Carnero.

At 1:30 a.m. police responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a home in the La Reserve neighborhood. The residents told police that they thought the burglar was their son-in-law, Michael Mongan.

Oro Valley Police Lt. Chris Olson said Mongan suffered a gash to his arm after he smashed a window during the alleged break-in. He fled on foot into the surrounding desert below the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Police followed a trail of blood from the house into the desert at the base Pusch Ridge, Olson said.

“We were able to track him through the neighborhood just following the blood,” the lieutenant added.

Oro Valley police brought in search dogs to scour the brush. A Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) team later joined the search, even dispatching a Blackhawk helicopter to the area. The aircraft circled the desert for several hours, according to witnesses.

Police feared that Mongan sustained grave injuries, Olson said. “We’re worried he has lost a lot of blood.”

Mongan remained at-large when police ended their search about 10 a.m.

He is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds and has blond hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information of Mongan’s whereabouts should call 911.
