The Pima County Attorney’s Office will hold its popular Citizens Prosecution Academy, beginning Wednesday, March 4.

The course, which is offered free of charge to residents of Pima County, will lift the veil on the workings of the criminal justice system and the County Attorney’s Office. Classes last seven weeks and participants receive a certificate upon completion.

“This is an amazing opportunity for people to meet prosecutors and staff from the County Attorney’s Office and get an insider’s look at what we do and how we do it,” County Attorney Barbara LaWall said in a release.

The academy includes opportunities for on-site visits to the medical examiner’s office, the Department of Public Safety crime lab, the adult jail and juvenile detention center, the state prison and a chance to observe a felony trial in Superior Court.

A range of speakers from the County Attorney’s Office, law enforcement, the DPS crime lab and medical examiner’s office will discuss topics, including cold case homicides, the “CSI Effect” and prosecuting sexually violent predators. In addition, issues, such as narcotics, gangs, ballistics/firearms, witness protection, Internet crimes, sex crimes, domestic violence, stalking, public integrity and the workings of the criminal justice system will be covered.

The spring 2009 academy begins March 4 and concludes April 15. Classes will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tucson Rillito Police Department, 1310 W. Miracle Mile.

An application is required and is available online at www.pcao.pima.gov.
