The Town of Marana has offered its police chief’s position to Tucson Police Department Assistant Chief Terry Rozema, the town said in a release Wednesday, Nov. 24.

Rozema has accepted the job, town spokesman Rodney Campbell said Wednesday. The offer is contingent upon Rozema passing standard background checks and town council confirmation. The council plans to confirm the appointment at the Tuesday, Dec. 7 meeting.

“I am truly grateful, honored and humbled by the invitation to become Marana’s new chief of police,” Rozema said in a release.

“The Marana Police Department is a strong organization filled with many men and women who serve our community with excellence and I look forward with great anticipation to working with each and every one of them to provide our residents with unparalleled service.”

Rozema, a Marana resident for more than 20 years, has been with the Tucson Police Department since 1987.

He serves as assistant chief over the support services division, which includes SWAT, traffic and communications among its functions. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in Michigan.

Rozema replaces outgoing Chief Terry Tometich, who was hired in April 2008.

“Our police department will continue its outstanding work under Terry’s leadership,” Town Manager Gilbert Davidson said. “His experience in the field and his knowledge of the region will be tremendous assets.”

There were 93 applicants for the position. The field was narrowed to six finalists who came to Marana for interviews last week.

If confirmed, Rozema would start the new job Jan. 3 following completion of training at the FBI National Academy on Dec. 10.
