Second-grade children will learn fire safety basics when Northwest Fire/Rescue brings the “mini muster” to 15 schoolyards throughout the Northwest during October.

Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 5-11.

Hands-on safety lessons and “lots of fun” are part of the mini musters, a release said.

Students dress in firefighter gear and aim a real fire hose to knock down targets. In the bucket brigade, they’ll hustle with teammates to fill a barrel with buckets of water. In the obstacle course, students practice home escape skills as they roll out of bed, climb through a window, and, just for fun, navigate a plank over a pool of water.

Children are at twice the risk of adults of dying in a home fire. Each year, approximately 900 children — an average of almost three a day — die in residential fires.
