“Committed to the future, inspired by the past” is the theme of the 2009 Marana Founders’ Day festivities on Saturday, March 21, at Ora Mae Harn Park.
Everyone from little tykes to seniors is encouraged to help celebrate the town’s founding fathers and mothers.
A car show, photography contest and flag football game are all part of the offerings at the 32nd annual event, kicked off by the 9 a.m. parade. According to Adelina Martin, parks and recreation’s special events coordinator, parade awards will be given in nine categories, including equestrian, float, best use of theme, comical and patriotic. “We had 80 entries last year,” she noted.
Mountain View High School students are joining Ken Meeks’ Marana High School auto shop class in conjunction with this year’s Founders’ Day to present its annual “Show and Shine” car exhibit. More than 100 vehicles from car clubs and individuals around southern Arizona are expected to be on display. Some will participate in the parade, as well, said Martin.
Although the NFL season is recent history, you can still cheer on your favorite local team in Marana’s little league flag football Super Bowl, being held on adjacent fields at the park following the parade.
Activities for kids and teens will abound, each housed in their own area. The Teen Zone, near the car show, includes a bungee run, rock climbing wall and information booths sponsored by military recruiters, Starr Skates and other organizations of interest. The Kid Zone will have inflatables, arts and crafts, costumed characters, a petting zoo and pony rides.
Adults can enjoy food vendors, the Marana Heritage display, a heritage lunch at the senior center and musical entertainment.
Organizers ask attendees to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Marana Community Food Bank.

If that’s not enough to keep you busy, hustle over to the Heritage Arena for rodeo activities that will include a tractor pull and mutton-bustin’ on Saturday and a junior rodeo on Sunday. Call 907-9549 for more details.
