More than 1,000 contestants in annual OV run

15 wheelchair athletes compete in distance classic

Hundreds of runners, and 15 wheelchair athletes, filled the streets of northern Oro Valley on Sunday for the annual Arizona Distance Classic, benefiting the leukemia and lymphoma society.

Ian Johnson of Tucson captured the half-marathon, finishing the course in 1:09.54.

Troy Jacobson of Oro Valley placed sixth, Steven Beeler of Oro Valley 15th and Ken Cottrell of Oro Valley 16th among 934 runners who came from Southern Arizona, New Mexico, greater Phoenix, Kentucky, Washington, Ohio, Indiana, Massachusetts and more.

Age-group half-marathon winners were Johnson; Jeanine Cordova of Mesa; Tajal Parikh; Andy Lawrence of Phoenix; Becca Tong of Queen Creek; Alex Lind of Scottsdale; Mary Meghan Daly of Las Cruces, N.M.; Chris Wittoesch of Tucson; Christine Ngai of Sierra Vista; Allan Phillips of Tucson; Adriana Osornio of Deming, N.M.; Steve Rains of Tucson; Jennifer Rischard of Tucson; Jeff Turner of Phoenix; Julie Darling of Tucson; Tom Maier; Sandi Baird of Tucson; Charlie Benson of Phoenix; Linda Portman of Aurora, Colo.; Ron Pina of Scottsdale; Kathi Hanley of Tucson; Mike O’Callaghan of Camp Verde; Catherine Quesnel of Tucson; Rick Olafson of Tucson; Shirley Hester of Tucson; Dennis Brewer; 70-year-old Marian Handy of Tucson; 74-year-old Neil Barber of Creston, B.C.; and 75-year-old Charles Sabatine of Victor, N.Y., who edged out Ted Harshorn, 76, of Batesville, Ind.

In the wheelchair division, Jordan Bird of Tucson led a field of 13 athletes with a time of 48:32.

Oro Valley runners led the way in the overall 5-kilometer results. Zeke Zankich was first in 19:23, Jessica Satiroff second in 20:11. There were 288 contestants.
