Chief Tucson public defender Charles Davies has been chosen as the new Marana town magistrate.

Davies was selected from six candidates at the July 23 town council meeting. His contract will be approved at either the Aug. 5 or Aug. 12 session.

“I’ve been a public defender for a long time, and I really wanted a change and I wanted that change to be Marana,” Davies said in a press release. “It’s an exciting place. I look forward to getting out in the community and talking to people about the court. People need to know that the court will treat them respectfully and fairly.”

The Marana town magistrate oversees a staff of 12 employees.

As the top public defender for Tucson, a position he held since 1990, Davies oversaw an office of 22 attorneys and 16 support staff members and managed a $3.2 million budget.

Prior to being a public defender, Davis ran his own law practice in the state of Washington.

The Marana position became vacant in April when then-magistrate Jim West was fired after allegedly retaliating against a court employee for an ethics reprimand against him.

The reprimand, issued in February, stated that West violated the state’s code of conduct when he presided over a traffic hearing of a fellow Rotary member and when he used paid sick leave to serve as a substitute judge in Ajo.

Davies is expected to start work after Labor Day. In the meantime, the town’s roster of substitute magistrates will handle cases.
