An Oro Valley resident and longtime nurse at the University Medical Center was among 11 from Arizona honored at the fifth-annual March of Dimes Arizona Nurses of the Year gala held Aug. 23 in Scottsdale.

Susan Kay Bohnenkamp and her UMC colleague Ana P. Marin were selected from 238 nominees. Winners were chosen in various categories, including education, advocacy, community service and leadership, a release said. UMC’s nurses were the only winners from Southern Arizona.

Bohnenkamp, a clinical nurse specialist who works primarily with cancer patients, received an Arizona Nurse of the Year Award in the category of patient care.

“Susan starts her day at 5 a.m. to cover a surgical oncology, gynecology and a medical oncology service,” her nomination said. “She also provides patient education and direct care for complex patients and assists the staff with implementing the plan and evaluating outcomes. Combining kindness with expert knowledge, Susan is an effective mentor and educator for nurses nationwide.”

Bohnenkamp helped start a successful staff journal club, monthly pharmacy updates, an End of Life Nursing Care Consortium course, and a national conference on women’s health issues with an oncology focus.

She has worked at UMC for 21 years, and earned her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Arizona College of Nursing.
