It was a rough 12 hours for Catalina residents Nick and Rosie Wiley.

At about 11 p.m. Thursday night, their red Chevy Blazer was stolen.

The next morning, on April 11, the Wileys were informed that their vehicle had been found near the corner of Orange Grove Road and Camino de la Tierra.

“Not cool, definitely not cool,” Nick said, observing damage thieves caused to his car.

After a high-speed chase along Orange Grove, the vehicle careened over a dirt median into a corner house at the corner of a cul-de-sac, hitting a car in a carport, taking out the supporting beam of the carport, slamming into a tree and rolling over before coming to a stop right-side-up.

Just before the crash, Deputy Kurt Dabb of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department noticed the stolen vehicle driving suspiciously and decided to pull it over. The driver then sped off before crashing just off Orange Grove Road at about 8:40 a.m., Dabb said.

Dabb apprehended the driver, Anthony Angulo, while bystanders helped capture the passenger, Jose Olivas-Valdez.

Angulo was charged with fleeing from law enforcement, theft of means of transportation, possession of cocaine, third degree burglary and criminal damage. Olivas-Valdez was charged with unlawful use of means of transportation, a charge that amounts to joyriding, Dabb said.

All the charges against Angulo and Olivas-Valdez are felony counts.
