Children who need a little extra support with their ABCs in the Amphitheater School District will get a boost this summer from an Oro Valley Community Foundation grant.  The grant has been approved for a new remedial reading “boot camp” managed by Copper Creek Elementary School but open to all students in the Amphi District.

Reading “boot camp” is targeted for students from third to fifth grades who need one-on-one instruction for strengthening their reading and comprehension skills to age appropriate levels for their grade.

The remedial reading program will be held during the summer vacation school break.

A second grant has been awarded to “Project Graduation” to enable high school students to participate in graduation activities.

OVCF scholarships will ensure that students at Canyon del Oro, Amphitheater and Ironwood Ridge high schools will be able to celebrate their high school graduations in a safe, sober and fun environment.

The Oro Valley Community Foundation begins its summer grants program in June 2011.

All applications for Foundation grants must be submitted by May 30. For more information on grant application requirements go to the OVCF website at www.cfsoaz.org.

On a related note, the OVCF Board of Directors was just elected Monnie Applegate to the Board. She is a manager with HealthNet Southern Arizona.

Before joining HealthNet, Applegate was with Interfaith Community Services.

The Oro Valley Community Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in the greater Oro Valley area through education and youth programs, supporting social service needs and the arts and sciences.

The Foundation makes grants only to IRS-authorized 501(c)3 charitable organizations and public schools.

To help support Foundation programs, citizens can contribute tax-deductible donations to the Oro Valley Community Foundation, 2250 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson AZ 85719.

They also can call 547-5954 or visit www.cfsoaz.org.
