More than 1,500 people packed the Oro Valley Public Library March 5. The occasion was not the reading of a “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” or “Twilight” book, but rather something more generous.

Many of the people were on hand to learn about volunteer opportunities at more than 20 blue-ribbon organizations. Volunteer Day – the first of its kind at the library – was deemed a huge success. It is expected to return on an annual basis.

“(The organizations) came in anxious and left tickled and satisfied,” said Bob Schumann, a library volunteer who coordinated the event. “Everyone was well pleased.”

A normal Saturday brings about 700 to 1,000 visitors to the library. The gate count March 5 was 1,520, which indicated to organizers that nearly half the people dropped by for Volunteer Day.

Visitors were greeted by volunteer hostesses, who led them to the event area or directed them to the correct station in the library.

“We wanted to make sure that everyone was exposed to everybody else,” Schumann said. “The hostess concept worked well.”

Volunteer Day is one of a number of activities scheduled as part of the library’s Community Days events. The calendar also includes Live Green Oro Valley on April 9, job search and career exploration assistance on Sept. 17, and an author/book day on Oct. 15.

Schumann is excited that so many people are participating in the library’s events.

“We’re so lucky to have a facility like this in Oro Valley that can furnish activities like these to our residents,” Schumann said. “The library is the center of the universe here. The employees and volunteers work at a level that is inspiring.”
