Northwest Fire District crews were called to the 6500 hundred block of West Ina Road just before 6 a.m. after a car struck an above ground three-quarter-inch high pressure gas line.  The gas line pressure was 350 psi.

The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Ina from the Picture Rocks area when the driver reported to paramedics and deputies that he fell asleep causing him to drift across the center line and strike a large saguaro cactus, mailboxes and then the high pressure gas line.  The vehicle then traveled back across Ina Road and came to a stop on the south side of the roadway.  The driver was not injured in the incident.

The first engine arrived to find a significant break in the line.  A Northwest Fire hazardous materials crew was then dispatched to the scene to assist with air monitoring.  Homes in the area are set back from the roadway enough to be clear from the leak and did not have to be evacuated.

Ina Road was closed in both directions from Cortaro to Silverbell until 8:30 a.m.  Southwest Gas will have roadway restrictions in place throughout the day as they make repairs to the damaged gas line.  Lane restrictions will be in place and delays are expected throughout the day.

Northwest Fire reminds everyone to be well rested for any driving responsibilities.  Drowsy driving can be hazardous for both short trips like early morning work shifts or returning from late night graveyard shifts and/or long periods of highway driving.
