Governor Jan Brewer has appointed Joseph E. La Rue to the Arizona State Transportation Board. He will represent Maricopa County in the planning and development of Arizona’s transportation network.

“Having practiced law in Arizona for nearly two decades, Mr. La Rue is extremely well-versed in a wealth of real estate matters,” said Governor Jan Brewer. “Given his experience – which includes nearly a decade at the helm of a major not-for-profit Arizona company – I am confident he will be a tremendous asset to the development of our State’s transportation network.”

La Rue, of Sun City, currently is Chief Executive Officer of Sun Health Partners and executive vice president of Sun Health Services. The nonprofit Sun Health provides comprehensive senior-living services, charitable giving for local hospitals and research and community health programs that serve area residents with chronic disease and medication management needs.

Prior to joining Sun Health in 2005, La Rue was an attorney practicing in the Sun City area for 16 years, with an emphasis in real estate finance and development. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business (1985), La Rue earned his law degree from the Arizona State University College in Law (1988).

“It means a great deal to me to have this opportunity to work alongside some of the State’s most committed planning experts in support of this important channel of economic development,” La Rue said. “I sincerely appreciate the Governor’s confidence and look forward to tackling some of the state’s biggest transportation challenges.”

La Rue is a former member of the Maricopa County Transportation Advisory Board, representing Supervisory District 4. He also is a member of the Arizona Town Hall Board of Directors and the WESTMARC Board Directors. Previously, he served a four-year term on the Peoria City Council (1997-2001).

La Rue, who replaces outgoing board member Felipe Zubia, has been confirmed by the Arizona State Senate to serve a six-year term.

The seven-member State Transportation Board has policy powers and duties in addition to serving in an advisory capacity to the Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation. Members of the board are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Arizona Senate to six-year terms. The board has broad authority to plan and develop Arizona’s highways, airports and other state transportation facilities. In addition to these general policy duties, the board is responsible for development and oversight of the state’s Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction Program.
