High school students from the greater northwest side claimed five of the 10 top spots at the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills State Finals earlier this month, including the title.

Team placements were:

1st: Ivan Rodriguez and Monty Miranda, with instructor Jerrad McMurrich; Flowing Wells

3rd: Cade Hollahan and Caleb Fuehrer, with instructor David Damiani; Mountain View

6th: Buddy Algeri and Eddie Macmeans, with instructor Jeremy Tarbet; Canyon Del Oro

9th: Gonzalo Romero and David Bailer, with instructor Donald Zell, Marana

10th: Hayden Schagel and Connor Kaufman, with instructor Brian Parag; Mountain View

As the first-place team, Rodriguez and Miranda won scholarships valued at $29,900 each to automotive programs nationwide, including the Ford FACT program at Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix and the Ford ASSET program at Glendale Community College. The two will travel to Dearborn, Michigan in June to represent Arizona in the National Finals, competing against other state champions from across the country.
