Sun City Vistoso has a new name. After more than two years of study, the active adult community’s name change committee recommended that the name be changed to Sun City Oro Valley.
The community’s legal name has not changed and the community will now use Sun City Vistoso DBA Sun City Oro Valley.
The 39-page report from the name change committee lists several reasons for the change. “The name change will take advantage of the community that surrounds us in a positive way and will more clearly identify our location,” the report states. “We will be able to build off our good name, Sun City, with a renewed marketing strategy.”
In 2009, the community’s long-range planning committee completed an investigation of areas relating to the future of the community. The long-range planning committee recommended an investigation of the community’s name.
The long-range planning committee that recommended researching the name change found that the name Sun City Vistoso produced negative reactions from non-residents and that the name did not project an image that was attractive to potential buyers.
At the end of the extensive study, the name change committee recommended the use of a DBA largely for marketing purposes, said Bob Mariani, Sun City Oro Valley community General Manager.
Some of the changes that come with the new name, like changes to the logo and use of the name in marketing, will be easy to implement. Some, like the changes in signage will take longer to plan. Others will happen over time as things like stationary are used up and replaced.
The change in signage is not a direct result of the name change, Mariani said. The community already had plans for updating signs.
The name of the golf course, for example, was already changed from Sun City Vistoso Golf Club to The Views Golf Club.
The name change committee was formed in March 2010 and held 17 public meetings and three study sessions. They spoke with local realtors and the Town of Oro Valley and held five focus group discussions.
The committee surveyed residents using a questionnaire both written and online.
Not all residents are happy with the change.
Longtime resident Micheal Burke said, “Our name, Sun City Vistoso, goes back some 25 years. A well-known and respected name. The word Vistoso is Spanish and means beautiful or spectacular, referring to the unobstructed Pusch Ridge and Catalina mountain views that abound.”
The suggestions from residents listed in the name change report range from Javelina Hollow and Bobcat Ridge, to Sun Haven Village and Acacia Ridge.
