Following a swearing-in ceremony for the re-elected Bob Stump, and the newly elected Bob Burns and Susan Bitter Smith, members of the Arizona Corporation Commission today voted to name Bob Stump as Chairman of the Commission. Stump has served on the Commission since 2009 and his term as Chairman will be two years.

Prior to Stump’s service on the Commission, he represented District 9 in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2002-2008. In the Legislature, Bob served as a member of the House Water and Agriculture Committee, where he helped promote sound water management policies for our state. He has a wide range of policy experience, having served as Chairman of the House Health Committee; Co-Chair of the Joint Select Committee to Investigate Operations and Conditions at the Arizona Veterans Home; Vice Chair of the Health and Rules committees; and as a member of the Commerce & Military Affairs, Ways & Means, Financial Institutions & Insurance, Ethics and Education committees.

Stump serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Regulatory Commissioners (NARUC), is a member of the Harvard Electricity Policy Group, and is an Advisory Council member of the Center for Public Utilities. He holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley.

“It’s been an honor to serve with Bob Stump and Brenda Burns and to turn the Chairmanship to Bob,” said Commissioner Gary Pierce who is ending his two-year term as Chairman. “Bob is well prepared to lead the Commission and I welcome Bob Burns and Susan Bitter Smith to the Commission. I look forward to having their experience and dedication to public service utilized on behalf of the citizens of Arizona.”

The Commission today also welcomed two new Commissioners, Bob Burns and Susan Bitter Smith who begin their four-year term.

Burns began his career in public service as an elected State Representative in 1989. He was Chairman of Appropriations, and served on many committees, including Health, Judiciary, Ways and Means, Transportation, and Insurance. In 2003, he was elected to the Arizona State Senate, where he served as Chairman of Appropriations, and on a number of committees, including Rules and Finance. In 2009, Burns was elected as President of the Arizona Senate, and served as such until 2010. Burns also served as a member of the Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD) Board of Directors beginning in 2001.

Susan Bitter Smith comes to the Commission having just completed a second six year term on the CAWCD Board of Directors, having served the last four as President of the Board. A native of Arizona, she served as a member of the Scottsdale City Council from 1988 to 1992 and also served as Vice Mayor. She has been Executive Director of the Arizona-New Mexico Cable Communications Association since 1980.

Bitter Smith has an undergraduate and graduate degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University and is a past Chairman of the ASU Alumni Association.

Bob Stump, Bob Burns and Susan Bitter Smith join current commissioners Gary Pierce and Brenda Burns who continue to serve their terms.
