Northwest Tucson’s head honchos are making time to ensure area residents-in-need have enough to eat. As part of National Mayors for Meals Day, March 23, Oro Valley Mayor Satish Hiremath spent much of his day delivering food to homebound residents and speaking to the recipients. The outing was coordinated as part of Interfaith Community Service’s Mobile Meals program.

Marana does not yet have the Mobile Meals service; however, on April 8, Marana Mayor Ed Honea will research the program by delivering meals.

Interfaith Community Services has been providing Mobile Meals to seniors and disabled adults in the northwest area of Tucson for 25 years. In that first year, the program established 10 recipients on two routes. Now operating at near maximum capacity with 14 routes working out of six facilities, ICS serves two meals daily to nearly 100 recipients Mondays thru Fridays. More than 100 volunteer drivers make Mobile Meals possible.

Mobile Meals provide balanced meals for seniors and disabled adults living in Northwest Tucson who are either physically or mentally unable to prepare adequate meals during a period of need, or are unable to fully understand how to prepare a modified or restricted diet required by their doctor.

A person may receive the service until he or she is physically able to care for himself or herself. When that happens, the meals will be discontinued until further need is established.

The intake process, from the prospective recipient’s initial phone call to meal delivery, takes approximately seven to14 business days.

A fee of $8 per day is associated with the program. The fee allows Mobile Meals to contract with hospitals, rehabilitation facilities and assisted-living centers to prepare the meals. ICS can accommodate those struggling financially with the option of applying for a sliding scale fee.

To sign up for the Mobile Meals’ service or to volunteer for ICS, call program coordinator Nick Aman at 297-6049.
