Oro Valley residents are invited to voice their comments about whether businesses should be allowed to display merchandise outdoors without a permit during an open house and public meeting to be held Monday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Oro Valley Town Council Chambers, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.

Outdoor displays of merchandise are currently prohibited in the Town of Oro Valley. The current Town Code requires businesses to obtain a temporary special-use permit to display items outdoors. The permit costs $370 and is good for 60 days. The permits, which are approved by the Town's Permitting Division staff, may be renewed.

A proposed amendment to the code would allow businesses to display merchandise outdoors using up to 50 percent of their façade.

The Town is seeking the public's input in reviewing those regulations and exploring options.

During earlier discussions, business owners told the Town that the outdoor displays are a "plus" for their business, said David Williams, the town's planning division manager.

Williams noted enforcement of the code is complaint-driven. "We will go and act accordingly," he said. He added the town is trying to be business friendly and understand the business owners' needs; it is considering changes to the code, such as the amendment, to meet those needs.

The matter is scheduled as a public hearing on the town council's Sept. 21 agenda. The council may act on the item that evening.
