On December 12, 2012, at approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department heard a set of distinct alarm tones over their radios, followed by an announcement that a deputy was involved in a physical fight with two male individuals at the intersection of Avra Valley Road and Anway Road. The broadcast was based on a 9-1-1 call from a male caller.

Using the automated vehicle locator information in the dispatch center it was determined there was a deputy near that intersection; however, upon hearing the alarm tones, he advised over the radio that he was fine and not involved in a fight. Units began to respond from all directions to the alleged incident location. Besides a roll call among all on-duty deputies in the area, the Sheriff’s Communications Unit contacted neighboring agencies to ensure all of their officers were okay and accounted for. A search of the area was conducted with negative results.

Once it was determined that the call was obviously a hoax, deputies learned the call came from a 9-1-1-only phone. Deputies working in the area became suspicious because approximately 90 minutes earlier, they had contact with a couple where the female, identified as Jennifer J. Golden (32), ended up being arrested for Driving on a Suspended License. During that encounter, the male party, identified as Daniel T. Golden (34), had become belligerent with deputies. The couple’s vehicle had been impounded and they refused the offer to be given a ride home by deputies. During their interaction with the couple, deputies noted a distinct New York accent on Mr. Golden. When they learned that the 9-1-1 caller was a male, they requested a copy of the 9-1-1 call be sent to their smart phones.

After they reviewed the call, both deputies who had contact with Golden during the stop clearly identified him by his voice and accent. Next they responded to the couple’s residence and met a family member. They learned the couple had been gone for some time. When they played the 9-1-1 call back to the family member and asked if the person recognized the caller’s voice, the family member clearly identified Daniel Golden as the voice of the caller.

While still at the residence, Golden arrived and was taken into custody. He was charged with False Reporting to Law Enforcement (Misdemeanor 1) and was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
