Thursday, Sept. 8, Heroes Day

Heroes Day honors law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, Border Patrol agents and other first responders who work to keep the community safe. It also raises funds for the University Medical Center Trauma Center.

It begins at 9:30 a.m. at La Encantada shopping center, 2905 E. Skyline Drive. People also can stop by any Jack Furrier Tire and Auto Care location to sign a giant thank you card.

Sunday, Sept. 11, Stephen Siller 5K/1K Runs

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is hosting a 5K run and kids 1K run. The runs will begin at 6 a.m. at Crossroads at Silverbell Park, 7548 N. Silverbell Road, in Marana.

Registration for adults is $30 at the event, or $25 in advance; kids registration is $15 at the event, or $10 in advance.

Casas Church Event

Casas Church will host a special event to pay tribute and recognition to the dedication and sacrifice made by local first responders and their families from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Representatives from the Oro Valley Police Department, Golder Ranch Fire District, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Northwest Fire District, Marana Police Department and Rural Metro Fire District will be on hand.

Present will be squad cars, fire trucks, police motorcycles, and a SWAT armored vehicle. Children can meet McGruff, the crime-fighting dog, and Sparky, the firemen’s robotic mascot, and also have their fingerprints recorded for identification purposes, free of charge.

Each of the participating local responder organizations will receive a check from Casas Church in the amount of $1,000 to use for internal needs or a partner charity of their choice.

Memorial church service

At 10:30 a.m., Continental Baptist Church will host a 9/11 memorial service to honor local police and firefighters at the Coyote Trail Elementary School cafeteria. It will include a brass band playing patriotic music, a flag presentation by a local Boy Scout troop, and a speech by a survivor of the Jan. 8 shooting tragedy at Oracle and Ina roads.

A free “All-American” lunch will be served. The Northwest Fire District will perform a fire truck demonstration. Admittance is free, but an offering will be taken. Childcare will be available.

Firefighter turkey dinners

Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 will express its appreciation to local firefighters by delivering turkey dinners to seven fire stations in the Golder Ranch Fire District, one in the Rural/Metro Fire Department, and a new station in the Mountain Vista Fire District.

The firefighters provide service to Catalina, Oro Valley, SaddleBrooke and southern Pinal County. This has been an annual event for the Elks since the year following Sept. 11, 2001.

9/11 musical tribute

Country singer Joyce Shaffer, who penned and recorded the song “Dark Angels” about the attack on the Twin Towers, will perform at the 10th Anniversary 9/11 “Heroes Walk Among Us” event sponsored by LD 26 and Sun City Republicans. 

It will take place at Ironwood Ridge High School, 2475 W. Naranja Drive, in Oro Valley. Doors open at 6 p.m. with refreshments available. Program starts at 6:30 p.m.

Joining Shaffer are Homeland Security-Border Patrol Tucson Sector, Oro Valley Police Department, Golder Ranch Fire District, the American Legion of Catalina, Buglers Across America, and Cub Scout Pack 209.
