Marana voters have until May 21 to decide whether or not they will support a solo ballot measure relating to the town’s home rule option.

Ballots began being mailed out last month.

The measure, if passed, would allow the town to set its budget based on the revenues it collects, rather than the $42.7 million in spending imposed under the state constitution.

The ballot question reads as follows:

“Pursuant to the Arizona State Constitution, this proposal establishes an alternative expenditure limitation for the Town of Marana for the next four years.

“Annually, the town council will determine the amount of the alterative expenditure limitation for the fiscal year after at least one public hearing. This alternative expenditure limitation replaces the state-imposed expenditure limitation.”

Mayor Ed Honea and Town Manager Gilbert Davidson have expressed their support of extending the home rule option, citing the fact deep budget cuts would occur if the measure failed.

If the majority of voters support the measure, the home rule option would extend through 2017.

Voters who have lost their ballot or need a replacement can visit the Marana Municipal Complex, 11555 W. Civic Center Drive, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays through May 20, and 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. on May 21.

Replacement ballots can also be found at the Pima County Recorder’s Office, 115 N. Church Ave., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays through May 20, and 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. on May 21.
