Last week, the Amphitheater and Marana Unified school districts held their annual district-wide spelling bees, each sending four students and an alternate to the Pima County Spelling Bee next month.
For the Marana Unified School District, Jeremy Parry, an eighth-grader at Marana Middle School, took first place for the second year in a row. Ironwood Elementary School sixth-grader Thomas Rood took second. Eighth-grader Elizabeth McGee, of Tortolita Middle School, took third place. IsaMaria Baker, an eighth-grader at Marana Middle School, took fourth place. The alternate, who placed fifth in the district’s spelling bee, was Samuel Rogers, a fifth-grader at DeGrazia Elementary School.
For the Amphitheater School District, Michael Chen, a fourth-grader at Copper Creek Elementary School, took first place. Luis Diaz, an eighth-grader at La Cima Middle School took second place. Taking third was Savannah Koskineini, an eighth-grader at Cross Middle School. In fourth place was Odessa Mix, a seventh-grader at Coronado K-8 School. The alternate, who placed fifth in the district’s spelling bee, was Sadie Azersky, a sixth-grader at Harelson Elementary School.
The Pima County Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m., at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, Berger Center for the Performing Arts, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd.
