Governor Jan Brewer announced that she has appointed Shawn Marquez as Acting Director of the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures.

“With nearly three decades of service to Weights and Measures, Mr. Marquez has the expertise and experience to continue advancing the Department’s important mission,” said Governor Brewer. “Mr. Marquez has been integral in streamlining agency operations, passing meaningful legislation and protecting Arizona businesses and consumers. I thank him for his continued service in his new role as Acting Director.”

Mr. Marquez has been with the Department for 27 years. He has served as Director of Compliance Programs since 2007, and has since taken on the roles of Deputy Director, Communications Director and Legislative Liaison. As Director of Compliance, Mr. Marquez provides agency leadership on matters pertaining to consumer protection and other Weights and Measures issues. He oversees and directs hundreds of investigations and inspections each month, including in the regulation of gasoline quality, fuel dispensers and vapor recovery; conducts informal settlement conferences involving civil penalties and provides assistance to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office in legal matters; and participates in all policy, staffing, legislative, budget and other business decisions for the agency.

Previously, Mr. Marquez served as Department as a Compliance Program Manager (2002-2007) and Weights and Measures Inspector (1987-2002). During his time with the Department, he has worked to streamline and consolidate agency operations, helped to pass the first state law requiring pre-employment background checks and drug testing for taxi cab, livery and limousine drivers and assisted in the development of a national model for investigating illegal moving scams.

Mr. Marquez has been appointed to replace outgoing Director Kevin Tyne, who will serve as Chief of Staff to Maricopa County Supervisor Andy Kunasek.

“Kevin’s service to the State of Arizona has been truly invaluable,” said Governor Jan Brewer. “He has been a loyal member of this administration from day one, and my dear friend and trusted confidant for nearly two decades. While I am saddened to see Kevin go, I am sincerely grateful for his honorable and devoted public service, which I know he will carry over to his next role. I wish him all the best.”
