WHEN: Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m. – noon

WHERE: Target, 6500 E. Grant Road (at Tanque Verde)

WHAT: With an estimated 85 percent of car seats installed incorrectly, this event will educate caregivers about the importance of car seat safety and proper installation. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on site to provide one-on-one “hands-on” help with installation.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injuries and death for children under the age of 14, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Properly installed car seats reduce fatal injury by more than 70 percent for infants and by 54 percent for children through age 4.

“Research shows that as children age, they are less likely to be in the appropriate child safety seat for their age and weight,” said Kimberly Romo, Safe Kids Pima County. In addition, Arizona recently passed a booster seat law which requires children ages 7 or under who are less than 4’9” in height to be secured in a child-passenger restraint system.

Safe Kids Pima County is a network of organizations whose mission is to prevent accidental childhood injury, a leading killer of children 14 and under. Spear-headed by Tucson Medical Center, the local chapter is part of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of more than 450 coalitions in 16 countries bringing together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments and volunteers to educate and protect families.
