It’s that time of the year again, and the Northwest Fire District would like to remind everyone of a few very important safety messages for keeping the kids safe as they begin another school year.

BACKGROUND:

Nearly 100 children are killed every year while walking to or from school, and another 25,000 sustain injuries as a result of school zone accidents. Kids are not as well versed in safety rules as we would like.

STUDENTS:

  • Always wear a helmet when riding any mode of transportation with wheels:  bikes, scooters (motorized or not) skate boards,

  • Ride with traffic and walk against traffic directions when traveling to and from school

  • USE CROSSWALKS AT ALL TIMES.  Crossing Guards are the best locations to cross.  Cross at traffic signals if available. Assume that drivers have not seen you, wait before crossing until a driver signals or directs you.

  • Pedestrians should always walk on sidewalks when available.

    DRIVERS:

  • Follow all speed limits through crosswalk/school zones 15mph and NO PASSING in the zones.

  • Take extra time to watch for children in high volume areas, they may not always stop at intersections (crosswalks, school zones and residential neighborhoods)

  • Never drive distracted, especially near school zones and schools.

  • Enter and exit driveways slowly and very carefully.
