Two PCC student honor society advisors are among 25 community college instructors selected as Phi Theta Kappa 2013 Faculty Scholars.

Rob Carey, a Science Laboratory Supervisor, and Steve Uyeda, a biology faculty member, were selected from among nearly 3,000 chapter advisors through a rigorous application process, based on knowledge of the 2012-2013 Honors Study Topic, "The Culture of Competition," and demonstrated excellence in teaching or administration.

"We congratulate them for being selected to serve and for their willingness and desire to surpass the traditional duties of an advisor by contributing in this manner," Susan Edwards, Phi Theta Kappa's Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs, said in PTK's announcement of the honor.

The Faculty Scholars will attend the annual Faculty Scholar Conference at PTK's Center for Excellence in Jackson, Miss., Jan. 30-Feb. 3. During the Conference, the Faculty Scholars will prepare to serve as facilitators for the PTK's Honors Institute, June 17-22, at Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

At the Honors Institute, the Faculty Scholars will lead groups of 15-20 honor students in seminar discussions of the issues presented by experts on the topic throughout the week. The Scholars will attend Part II of the Faculty Scholar Conference prior to the Honors Institute, June 15-17 at Villanova.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually.
