Former Mesa Verde teacher named favorite by Barnes & Noble

Retired school teacher Bonnie Lafferty has been named the local winner of the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest. She will be recognized on Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m., at the Barnes & Noble store in the Foothills Mall, where she will receive a special award acknowledging her achievement.

Family, friends and the public may attend this free event.

Lafferty was nominated by a former student, Danielle Murdoch, who had Lafferty as her second-grade teacher when both were at Mesa Verde Elementary School in Northwest Tucson. Danielle is now an eighth grader at Sonoran Science Academy; she remembered Lafferty so fondly that she was compelled to nominate her.

Danielle also will receive a certificate of recognition at the store during the ceremony. Sonoran Science Academy will receive a set of 10 Children's Classics books for its school library.

For this contest, students were invited to nominate their teacher by writing essays, poems or thank you letters that share how their teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire their teacher. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher's qualities, the sincerity of the student's appreciation, and the quality of expression and writing.

Lafferty will now be entered into the regional competition, where six winners will be chosen. From the pool of regional winners, one teacher will be named the Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year.
