Governor Jan Brewer today announced the appointment of Roger L. Jacks to the Arizona State Board of Education. Amy Hamilton has been re-appointed to the Board for a second term.

“There can be no higher priority than the education of Arizona’s young people,” said Governor Brewer. “With both an honorable military background and a record of excellence in education, Roger will be an asset to the Arizona State Board of Education and our state’s school system.”

Since 2008, Mr. Jacks has been the Superintendent of Schools for Kingman Unified School District, where he has led 900 employees, 7,200 students and 12 schools. He previously served Kingman Unified School District as Assistant Superintendent (2007-2008) and Director of Human Resources (2006-2007).

Mr. Jacks’ prior administrative roles include: Principal of Desert Pines High School (2002-2006); Assistant Principal (1999-2002) and Dean of Students (1998-1999) of Rancho High School; Coordinator for Rancho High School Magnet Academies (1996-1998), where he implemented and managed aviation and medical academies; and Northwest Director of Air Force ROTC Programs (1992-1993), where he was responsible for aerospace education programs at 36 major universities and 35 high schools in 19 states.

Mr. Jacks also has served on an array of education committees in Arizona and Nevada, including the Arizona Solutions Team; Arizona Superintendent’s Association; and the Nevada Commission of Educational Excellence. In addition to his wide range of professional experience in public education, Mr. Jacks is heavily involved in his community. He serves on the Mohave Meth Coalition; Board of Directors of the CASA Council for Children; and the Kingman Rotary Club.

Mr. Jacks received undergraduate degrees in Teaching and Social Studies from the University of Northern Colorado, a Master of Arts in Sociology from Pepperdine University and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Roger L. Jacks will replace Vicki McLeod Balentine, whose term expired in January.

Additionally, Governor Brewer has reappointed Amy Hamilton to the Arizona Board of Education for a second term. A fifth-generation Arizonan, Ms. Hamilton has been teaching for 13 years. Currently, she teaches 1st Grade for Mesa Public Schools.

“Both Amy and Roger bring to the Board of Education a passion for children’s learning,” said Governor Brewer. “I am pleased that two individuals of their caliber and experience are willing to give of their time and energy for this noble cause.”

Mr. Jacks and Ms. Hamilton will serve four-year terms, expiring January 18, 2016.
