Driver killed in single vehicle rollover in three points

On Saturday, Aug. 11, at approximately 10:24 a.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a call from Border Patrol Agents who reported that they had just observed a rollover accident in Three Points.

Deputies from the San Xavier District responded to the area of Sierrita Mountain Road and John Avenue, where they found a Saturn Vue that had rolled over onto its passenger side.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit also responded to the scene. They learned that Border Patrol agents were travelling southbound on Sierrita Mountain Road when they observed the SUV in oncoming or northbound traffic. They saw how the car went onto the dirt shoulder on the opposite side of the roadway and up an embankment. Agents told deputies that the vehicle was travelling at a low speed, and once it hit the embankment it slowly rolled over onto its passenger side.

When the agents approached the vehicle, they found the driver, a 72-year-old male, to be the sole occupant of the car. They tried to communicate with the man through the closed windows, but he could only nod his head. The Three Points Fire Department also responded and extracted the driver from the vehicle. As the man was unresponsive at that point medical personnel immediately began efforts to resuscitate him. He was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation continues.
