Pima County will soon be home to the Southern Arizona Motorsports Raceway, a 2.8-mile, 14-turn racecourse that will sit on 400 acres of Tucson’s southeast side.
Expected to open in 2017, preliminary projections show the development could prove to be an economic powerhouse for the county, estimated to draw in $264 million in its first 10 years of operation – a period in which the developer has agreed to spend up to $67 million in capital improvements for the course.
The county projects additional impacts of $343 million in hotel stays, $247 million in local dining, and $368 million in local shopping over the same period.
The county will charge the greater amount of $137,000 per year or two percent of gross revenues.
The raceway is expected to attract major professional events such as IndyCar, Super Bikes, Historic Racing, and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Racing.
Located just south of the Pima County Fairgrounds, the Southern Arizona Motorsports Raceway will complement other area racing facilities.
The raceway will also promote community interaction through involvement with educational institutions like the University of Arizona and the Vail School District.
The course will complement other nearby race-related facilities like Southwestern International Dragway and the Musselman Honda Circuit.
Per the lease agreement, the developer is required to spend at least $15 million to build the facility and its amenities.
Upon completion, the facility is expected to attract between 15,000 and 50,000 spectators depending on the type of event, and produce 150 high-paying full-time jobs and 285 part-time jobs.
The lease agreement stands for up to 18 months for design and commencement of construction. When construction is completed, the term will be extended to 25 years with one 25-year option to renew.
The lease also spells out that the tenant is responsible for addressing and managing any potential noise nuisance that may arise as a result of the racecourse.
The exact location of the track will be at 11900 S. Harrison Road.
