I-10 shut down after driver impaled by guardrail

A man driving on Eastbound I-10 near Orange Grove Road lost control of his vehicle striking a guardrail.

Northwest Fire District responded to the accident and found one male trapped inside his vehicle. Crews discovered that the man was impaled by the guard rail making it difficult to remove him.

The heavy rescue unit was called out to assist in the extrication of the man and the rescue took 39 minutes. The man sustains critical injuries, according to Adam Goldberg with Northwest Fire.

Due to his extensive injuries, a medical helicopter was landed on the interstate to fly the man to the trauma center at UAMC.

The exact cause of the accident is unknown and DPS deputies were on scene.
