Marana finance department receives national recognition

Posted

For the sixth straight year, the Town of Marana Finance Department was honored with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

The award was issued for the Town’s fiscal year 2013 budget and comprehensive financial plan.

The GFOA determines award winners based on how well a government’s budget document meets program criteria as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device.

Budget documents have to be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in 14 mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.

“The Town of Marana is committed to providing residents and business owners with detailed financial information that follows the highest principles of governmental budgeting,” said Marana Finance Director Erik Montague.

Marana Public Information Officer Rodney Campbell said the award speaks volumes about the Town’s transparency in government.

“Transparency is the most important thing to us, and we want our residents and taxpayers to know where the spending is going and why, and we want to be held accountable.”

Campbell said the town is privileged to recieve the award, particularly given its rarity in comparison to the large number of government entities evaluated each year by the GFOA.

“Considering this award is given to municipalities throughout the U.S. and Canada – that’s a wide net, not just a regional award,” he said. “Given that this is the sixth year in a row we have won the award, that’s something that definitely proves we are committed to our budget process and continue to make that process a top priority.”

The GFOA serves 17,500 government finance professionals in North America alone.
